Axle problems?

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Oh axles! They are an extremely important part of the yoyo; they are the screw that holds it together. Unfortunately, sometimes they can have problems.  Two of the most common problems are over tightening and the axle slipping to one side.  These two problems can be easily prevented or fixed.

Setting up offstring and freehand yoyos

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

String tricks may be fun, but a lot of people want to try out different styles of play: like offstring (4A) and freehand (5A). In offstring, the yoyo is not attached to the string.  In freehand, the yoyo is attached to the string, but instead of being attached to your hand, it is attached to a counter weight.  Of course, with these variations from normal play, there are slight variations with how they are set up.

Bust away the rust!

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Here is a fact of life: some metals can rust. In the case of yoyos, although the yoyo won’t rust, the bearing it comes with can. However, there are ways of preventing your bearing from rusting and, if it happens there are ways to remove it.

This is what a rusted bearing looks like.

Before You Bind…

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

What defines a player who should be throwing responsive(a style of yoyoing in which the yoyo can come up with a tug) from one who should play unresponsive(a more advanced style of yoyoing in which the player has to use a technique called a bind to bring the yoyo back to the hand)?  Many will answer that question by stating that a player who throws unresponsive must be able to bind.  Unfortunately, this answer causes new players to focus on the bind, and forget about the many building blocks that help to develop their yoyo skills.

How to Replace Friction Stickers

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

As many of you know, silicone (a response system used in many unresponsive yoyos) and friction stickers (used in Duncan yoyos) do not last forever.  Less of you, however, know how to replace them.  Luckily, it is a very simple procedure and this guide will teach you how.

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

There have been many times where yo-yo players have come up to the store, or asked around other kids how they set up their yo-yos.

As we all know, different people play different types of styles and have different setups for different yo-yos which they own.

Different people set up their yo-yos differently, what is YOUR setup???

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

A couple of players who have bought the Freehand Zero have been mentioning about how responsive it is out of the box, and how difficult it is to play with.

Thing is, what people DO NOT know is that the Freehand Zero is one of the most ideal yo-yos out there that can cater to both beginners and professionals alike.

All you need though, is a little modification, and you’d good to go…

YoyoJam Lubes: Which lube fits which yo-yo?

So we’ve taught you how to wash your bearing, but then you realise that you’d prefer a yo-yo that’s more responsive, and you don’t like to bind your yo-yo.

A few of you may have purchased the YoyoJam lube already but have no idea how to use it. Spinworkx takes a look at how you should oil your bearing, and which oil suits which type of play.

Which Yo-Yo, What Style?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

So a few of our readers have been posting quite a bit about questions regarding yo-yos and the styles of play their suited for.

So which shapes are suitable for which style?

So which shapes are suitable for which style?

Truth be told, although you can technically use one yo-yo to do all styles of play, some do it better than others.

It’s like footwear, you can run in slippers if you like, but a pair of shoes would make running easier.

Just like the example above, different yo-yo shapes also help with different styles of play, as we take a brief look today at what shapes are suitable for which style of play…
