Budget Busters
When One Drop Yo Yos first released the M1, it sparked a rave among the yo-yo community. Finally, a high performance metal yo-yo at the 2/3 to even 1/2 the price of your average high-performance metal.
Not long after, however, YoyoFactory figured they too could play the same game, and released three budget busters, the DV888, a collaboration project between YoyoFactory and Dave Bazaan from Buzzon Yo-Yos, the Hectic, another metal yo-yo that sports a rather unique design, and lastly, the Frantic, which takes the shape of the Catch 22.
Today, we take a look at the large bearing YYF Hectic and the One Drop Flow Groove M1 to see what both yo-yo companies have brought to the table in terms of high performance budget metals.
Putting both yo-yos side by side, one can tell they are pretty similar in terms of diameter. The Hectic is 50.08mm while according to One Drop’s website, the M1 is 50mm, making it slightly smaller than the Hectic. Both yo-yos also sport hgh quality stainless steel bearings that come in their pricier counterparts. But that’s where their similarities end…
Turning both yo-yos to their profile side, you immediately can tell the difference between both budget players.
The M1, also know as “Metal for Everyone”, sports a much more conventional yo-yo shape, thus, sticking to it’s motto. YoyoFactory, however, has taken their design up one notch, giving it a much more radical shape, and a name to match.
Simply put it, the M1 looks like a squished version of the larger Project, while the Hectic resembles a squished version of ThrowDown Yo-Yo’s Luchador.
Another thing one would notice between the two would be its surface. The M1 comes with a traditional anodized surface while YoyoFactory has opted for a bead blasted coat instead which gives the yo-yo a bigger advantage in terms of grinding.
In terms of response system, both yo-yos adopt a silicon response for their budget metals. The Hectic has gone for the same white silicon response you’d find in the Plastic Grind Machines as well as the much more pricey Superstars, while the newer M1 comes with the Flow Groove response, which is also a silicon based transparent response system which you can pry out and fill with your own choice of silicon if you like.

The M1 sports a "Flow Groove" response for those who wish to apply their own flowable silicon to their yo-yo.
Whether or not you prefer the One Drop or YoyoFactory’s approach towards budget metals, it all results with the same conclusion: They benefit the customer.
So whether or not you prefer the more conventional M1 or the rather eccentric Hectic, both yo-yos are great performers and are definitely worth your money.
