Like Father, Like Son

The new SGD$48.00 PGM(left) and the older SGD$70.00 PGM(right)...so what's the difference?
So we’ve got a few people asking us about the difference between the old and new Plastic Grind Machines, questions which include, “Why the price drop?”, or “Does it play better?”, or “Is it a new design?” etc.
We decided to take both father and son out for a spin to find out more…
Origins
One of the biggest differences would be the packaging, which comes in a lovely green graphics design to compliment the yo-yo. The PGM now comes in another packaging as well, which you can rotate the yo-yo in the middle like a showcase display. YoyoFactory has been consistantly pushing the design of yo-yo packaging, and it has come as no surprise that they would do the same to their newer products as well.

New manufacturer = Cheaper products. Outsourcing isn't always a bad thing!
One thing you WILL notice on the new packaging are the words “Made In China”. Now before you go all bonkers about the fact that YoyoFactory has begun outsourcing their products to other countries, don’t forget that these places produce some of the best products around for much cheaper prices. Brands like Apple, Dell, D&G, Armani and even yo-yo brands like Duncan, have products that are manufactured in the country. So despite what you read and hear on the news, the move to China has proven to be a good decision.
Better Refinements
One of the things you may or may not notice when you take out the new PGM, would be that it’s injection moulding snap-off point has now been nicely trimmed away. When we initially took the yo-yo out for a look, we though they had totally removed snap-off point, but later found out that it was just a really good work with a cutting tool that now makes the area looks almost flawless!

Notice that dark-ish area? That's the point where plastic is snapped off from the mould

Notice the snap-off point on the newer PGM? It's so much better this time round.
WHAT? No more customizable weights???
Despite the refinements to the injection moulding, the new PGM nolonger sports customizable weight rings in the packaging.

Rubber weight rings on the older PGM allowed you to fine-tune your weight distribution
Instead, a single block of plastic rim is now fitted to where the rings once were, giving it a more fixed overall rim weight distribution without the choice to customize the yo-yo to your preferred weight.

Whether you love it or hate it, the new PGM swaps the use of rubber weight rings for a standard block.
Some may see this as a downgrade from the previous PGM, others would prefer it’s simplicity over having too much options to choose for a plastic yo-yo.
No more Premium Grades?

The bearing that comes with the new PGM nolonger bears the YYF initials
One last thing we realized with the new PGMs, were that they nolonger sport the YYF initials engraved onto their bearings.
Lower grade bearings? Perhaps, still, prolonged play proved that the bearings that come with the new PGMs are still every bit as good as the Spec bearings that came with the older PGMs.
Conclusion
Although the YoyoJam Legacy is still one of the cheapest priced yo-yos which offer straight-out-of-packaging professional play, what YoyoFactory has done is they have taken an already formidable opponent, gave it a few tweaks, and set it at a price that is now almost in direct competition with the YoyoJam range.
The new PGM is a yo-yo worth getting given it’s new price range. If you haven’t gotten one yet, their available at our Spinworkx store today!

Plastic Grind Machine (YoyoFactory)
4.5 out of 5 stars
Love: Cheaper price, a whooping SGD$22 off the original PGM. Better refinements to quality control.
Hate: Lack of customizable weight rings.

Do i need to be able to bind to use this yo yos?
July 19th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Yep, these do indeed need a bind. If you are looking for a YYF that performs well without having to learn binds yet, a Velocity would be ideal!
July 19th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
thnks, but are there any others that do not use the starburst system?
July 19th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
If you’re looking for YYF, probably not. Duncan has Freehands that don’t require binds. YoyoJams are good, but wear out in response after awhile and are difficult to play with if u can’t bind it either =)

Are there anything like these but are cheaper?
August 6th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
You can fork out SGD$32 for a Duncan Freehand, but for a YoyoFactory of this grade, probably not, the Velocity is a good yo-yo, but not as professional-grade as you’d get from a PGM

then how about the duration of a sleeper of a velocity?when compared to the PGM,which is longer?
September 10th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Hi Syafie,
The PGM has a better rim weight so it should spin longer than the Velocity.
